What does EV3 stand for?

I was wondering what the official reason behind the name of LEGO's latest MINDSTORMS robotics platform. What does "EV3" stand for?

Yes, and I have said so in my answer. The FAQ page was not available when I wrote my answer. Thanks for the heads-up though, I've updated my answer for an additional source link. Also, generally answers should be longer then a link and a line of text :)
@CarlSmith - As bungeshea states, we prefer "substantial" answers here, and I've had many cases where links into LEGO.com have died within months of my posting because they have updated the site, moved content around, etc.
How much more substantial can it be? The question is simple, the answer is simple, and best provided by providing a link to the official docs. The accepted answer is hardly an essay.

From the official LEGO Education site and the official EV3 FAQ:

What does EV3 stand for?

This is the third generation of the LEGO MINDSTORMS platform and the "EV" stands for evolution, hence EV3.

@Ambo100 No, I don't think so. EV3 is not NXT, it's a completely different line. See this post on the Mindboards forums and all following posts for more info – bungeshea Jan 19 at 21:36

@Ambo100 I'm not sure the numbers are incremental in that way - NXT started back at "1" effectively after versions 1, 1.5 and 2.0 of Mindstorms Robotics Invention System, so the 3 really comes from the fact that it's the 3rd generation (RIS, NXT and now EV3). – Zhaph - Ben Duguid♦ Jan 20 at 0:29
