Is it more efficient to colour code your LEGO bricks or sort them by shape? What are the best combinations of elements if you've not got enough boxes for each type?

Once you get serious about LEGO modelling, you need some way to sort your bricks out so that you can easily see what you've got and what you're missing to finish off your latest MOC.

Keeping everything in one big bin is not a sustainable solution, but what works for you?

You might think that sorting by colour is "obvious" but that's usually the least efficient option, and sorting by type (number of studs, shape, etc.) is usually better, and then you can sort by colour if (for example) you have a large number of mid, light and dark greys.

We have some great ideas around this on the question:

What are proven methods for sorting a large number of parts?
