@CreationEdge The LEGO Museum has a few more variants of the wooden duck (left, second shelf down). Some of them don't appear to have a platform but it's clear there was a lot of variations in the design.

If you're sorting bricks with a fixed width and variable length such as beams, axles and certain bricks you might be able to build a purely mechanical solution such as this.
