The question asks "is it as accurate as the EV3 light sensor?" The EV3 has a Color sensor. There are important differences, like the ability to turn on/off the 3 color lights. I'm not editing because the main question is about the Light sensor.

What color is the marker and the piece of plastic? What type of plastic? Most Lego pieces are ABS plastic, but I think the clear pieces are something else.

Please provide a screenshot of the EV3 program. I suspect the sensor port number is the problem. The EV3 does some work in the background to get this to work automagically.

One light sensor pointed forward suggests that the robot should at regular intervals, stop turn right, turn left, and compare those light sensor values and compare to make sure the robot is still headed in the right direction. Start with just that. Spinning in a circle and finding the brightest value would be a next step.
