I was a professional video-game developer in Vancouver. Now I'm working at a Mac sysadmin in rural Southern Alberta.

I'm a competent C++ programmer, I love python, I've learned a little bit about Objective-C, and, of late, I'm programming in Smalltalk (Squeak), hacking on Scratch to help kids learn robotics.

Thanks for the reply. I especially love the idea about grouping and counting the remainder.

Thank you, Ӎσᶎ. I'm not at all opposed to taking the parts out of the tackle box -- it never even occurred to me that one might be able to count them otherwise. Its just that when I have more than a dozen pieces of one type, I want to be able to count them quickly after I've gotten them out of the box, just to check that the quantity is right. That paper you linked to looks very interesting.

I've been meaning to get ahold of that book.

Interesting. I'd often thought that the holes in the beams should be better centered. Is there any reason that the studless beams can't be made with an even number of holes? I must say that, while vertically reinforcing a part with the older system took some thought, building up or rotating 90 degrees was straightforward, without using any special joiners.

Ah. It must've been the #5 ones I was working with. Thanks again : )

Aha! I knew there was a reason for the angle on the lift arm. Thank you. I did try connecting a number of angle bricks (of the same type) together with axles to see if I could make a complete circle, and it didn't work. I'll have to try again; maybe my axles are bent.
