@erikolson Fair enough :) that would have some impact then, and I imagine their automated factories wouldn't leave the plastic heating up long enough to sag into the middle for added thickness on the sides

Indeed, most cars are 4 or 6 studs wide, but to get two minifigs next to each other you really need to be at least 8 wide.
