Former LEGO ambassador and LEGO zealot as a whole. If I could give negative rep for people writing "Legos", I would. It's going to be very hard not to suspend any offender though.

comment What does SNIR stand for?
Told you. Funnily enough, I just noticed now that there's a link to it in the article of Didier Enjary mentionned in the question. It's footnote [2], referred to right after the word "SNIR".

comment How are LEGO sets designed?
Not first hand per se as I'm not a designer myself, but this information is gathered from conversations with some designers, and with people who attended fan workshops in Billund. The only thing I can't really remember having been told explicitely is the bargaining between teams; but it's true that the cost of a new element has to be supported once only. Again, elements which fit better within the system will be more readily accepted for production anyway.

comment LEGO cleaning techniques and tools
If the goal is to sell them, it's indeed a good practice to at least mention the environment they were in, especially if from a smoker house, or one in which pets roam freely as some buyers have allergies. Some say that you can't wash these away.

comment What does SNIR stand for?
Found it: Old fishermans house near the shore, by Reinhard "Ben" Beneke, who probably pioneered the technique.

comment What does SNIR stand for?
I've seen pictures of a house on a beach which uses this technique with walls built entirely of 1x1 plates in various shades of grey, and in various orientations (thus not all aligned). I wish i could find it back, because the result was indeed superb
